Security System Replacement Questions

Every question we get asked about security system replacement, answered straight.

Questions

How It Works

  • How do I know if the backup battery needs replacing?

A BAT or SYSTEM LO BAT message that stays on after the system has had time to recharge is the clearest sign. If the keypad is also beeping at regular intervals, the battery is likely no longer holding a charge and needs to be swapped.

  • Will the low-battery warning clear on its own after a power outage?

Sometimes. A brief outage can trigger the warning while the battery recharges. If the message keeps returning over the following day or two, the battery is failing and recharging will not fix it.

  • Can just the battery be replaced without swapping the whole system?

Yes. Most panels only need the backup battery or one worn component replaced. The correct part depends on the panel model, a 12V 7Ah unit fits most DSC and Honeywell panels, but the model should always be confirmed before ordering.

  • What happens if the wrong battery size is installed?

The trouble message may clear for a few days, then return. A battery with insufficient capacity cannot sustain the panel during a power outage, and the panel will flag it again. Matching the replacement to the exact panel spec avoids repeat calls.

  • Does the system need to be placed on test before the work starts?

Yes. The system should be placed on test with the monitoring station before any component is touched. This prevents a repair triggering a false dispatch. After the replacement, the system is taken off test and each zone is verified.

  • What if I delay replacing a failing component?

A dead backup battery means the system loses power the moment the mains go out, leaving the property unmonitored during an outage. A dead sensor zone means that entry point is no longer detected, even if the rest of the system is active.
