How many carbon monoxide detectors does my home need?
One is rarely enough. A whole-home setup needs a detector on each floor, one outside each bedroom cluster, and one in the basement near the furnace. The exact count is confirmed during the on-site assessment, not before.
Where exactly should a CO detector go in a bedroom hallway?
Outside the bedroom cluster, at the height specified in the manufacturer instructions, and at least 15 feet from any cooking appliance. The goal is audibility from inside a closed bedroom, so placement is tested, not assumed.
Does a carbon monoxide detector go high or low on the wall?
It depends on the model. Some manufacturers specify head height; others specify ceiling mounting. Following the manufacturer instructions for that specific unit is the only correct answer, general rules vary by product.
Do I need an electrician to fit a CO detector?
Not always. Battery-powered detectors can be wall-mounted without electrical work. Hardwired or interconnected alarms require electrical handling. The site assessment identifies which type suits each location before any work begins.
What happens if I delay getting proper CO coverage?
A home with a single misplaced detector can have no audible warning in the sleeping areas where it matters most. CO from a furnace or water heater can accumulate overnight, and an alarm that cannot be heard from a closed bedroom provides no practical protection.
Can a CO detector give false alarms near a stove or furnace?
Yes. Placing a detector within 15 feet of a gas stove, furnace, or bathroom exhaust can trigger nuisance alerts. Correct clearance distances, specified in the manufacturer instructions, prevent this without reducing real detection coverage.
